at posterior cerebral locations which are not grossly pathological (Jasper, 1949; Penfield & Jasper, 1954). The alpha rhythm under these conditions is of larger amplitude than the alpha rhythm of EEG obtained through scalp leads. This difference in amplitude reflects shunting by these surroundings of the skull. All electrocortical activity suffers shunting by the intact CSF, dura, and brain to the same extent. Whether the brain pulsates mechanically or not makes no difference in the waveform of the alpha rhythm. The possible artifact in electroencephalography which Kennedy's model implies therefore seems nonexistent. REFERENCES

The effects of acute, sub-chronic and chronic psychical stress on the brain electrical activity in male rats

Introduction: Stress is a main factor influencing brain functions as revealed by the electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. Moreover, different stress durations seemingly cause perturbations in brain waves and lead to mental disorders. This study investigates the effects of acute, sub-chronic and chronic stress on EEG in rats.  Methods: Twenty-eight Wistar adult male rats were randomly all...

Chemical ablation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus and its effect on electroencephalographic tracings and pain threshold in the tail flick test

The present study was carried out to explore the possible involvement of the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus in the inhibitory descending pain control system associated with the tail flick test and EEG recordings. Adult male (NMRI) albino rats weighing 200 ± 20 g were used. Rats were divided into three groups: experimental, sham and control. The arcuate nucleus was destroyed unilaterally ...

Does Muscle Fatigue Alter EEG Bands of Brain Hemispheres?

Background: Muscle fatigue has been known to influence brain activity, but very little is known about how cortical centers respond to muscle fatigue. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of muscle contraction and fatigue induced by two different percents of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) on Electroencephalography (EEG) signals.Material and Methods: In t...

EEG: Origin and Measurement

The existence of the electrical activity of the brain (i.e. the electroencephalogram or EEG) was discovered more than a century ago by Caton. After the demonstration that the EEG could be recorded from the human scalp by Berger in the 1920s, it made a slow start before it became accepted as a method of analysis of brain functions in health and disease. It is interesting to note that this accept...

Alpha rhythm onset detector based on localized EEG sensor

The goal of this study is to detect the onset of alpha rhythm in the electroencephalography (EEG) signal after eye closure. We developed an algorithm that detects the alpha rhythm onset by analyzing the FFT of an EEG signal, obtained by means of a localized sensor in the occipital zone, developed with specific characteristics for alpha rhythm acquisition. The EEG signal of eight subjects was re...
